◆ Fan Ho "Selected Works" Mini Portfolio ◆
Fan Ho moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong in 1949 and has been photographing the city ever since. After World War II, Hong Kong became a British colony and achieved remarkable economic development, but Ho's photographs capture the city's streets and the daily lives of the people living there at that time.
These nostalgic images have a unique texture and melancholy that are reminiscent of legendary Czech photographer Josef Sudek.
This portfolio was created with the cooperation of the Fan Ho Foundation and Hong Kong's Blue Lotus Gallery.
About the artist
Fan Ho
Born in Shanghai in 1931, he moved to Hong Kong with his family in 1949. Ho began taking photos at an early age with his father's camera. Largely self-taught, his photographs reflect his interest in the city, including alleys, slums, and markets. He developed his photographs in his bathtub at home, producing an important collection of work documenting Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s, a city that was then becoming a major metropolis. Ho was named one of the "Top 10 Photographers in the World" by the Photographic Society of America from 1958 to 1965.
What is collotype?
In offset printing, a common printing method, colors and shades are expressed by the density of small halftone dots, but in collotype, colors are expressed in continuous tone, so they can be expressed in fine details that are closer to the real thing, like a photograph.
