1925-1941
Shoji Ueda was born in 1913 and while running a photo studio in his hometown of Tottori, he exhibited works in photo magazines and exhibitions, and distinguished himself as a photographer. His staged photographs, in which subjects (and sometimes families) are placed as if they were objects against the background of the sky and sand dunes of the Sanin region, are still highly regarded around the world.
This series is a collotype portfolio series long awaited by Shoji Ueda fans, featuring his representative works in the "Ueda-cho" style, such as "Daddy, Mommy and Kids."

About the Artist
Shoji Ueda (Ueda Shoji)
Born in Tottori Prefecture from 1913 to 2000. He moved to Tokyo at the age of 19 and studied at the Oriental School of Photography, before returning to his hometown and opening the Ueda Photo Studio. His staged photographs, with the sky, horizon, and sand dunes of the Sanin region as backgrounds, are known as the "Ueda style." His representative works include "Children's Calendar" and the "Sand Dune Series."
What is collotype?
In offset printing, a common printing method, colors and shades are expressed by the density of small halftone dots, but in collotype, they are expressed by continuous gradations, so they can be expressed in fine details that are closer to the real thing, like a photograph.
